“Timkin’s wife left him during a blisteringly cold Thanks-giving week, two nights before their annual Balloon Night party. There was no time for Timkin to call their guests and can-cel; nor would he know where to call in many cases. It was the sort of event attended by people from all corners of their lives whether or not they could produce a fresh invite. Once invited always invited, he and Amy had said.”—The introduction of Balloon Night, a selection from Stay Up With Me by Tom Barbash. Read the entire short story here.
This winter we’re doing something kind of new in the Harper Perennial / Paperbacks corner: publishing fantasy. Starting at the end of December (literally, the 31st) we’re bringing back into print Sergei Lukyanenko’s Night Watch series with the first book, Night Watch. The second and third books, Day Watch and Twilight Watch respectively, will be back on shelves in January and February. We’re rolling these out in anticipation of the newest book in the series, New Watch, giving y’all time to dive (back) into the series and get prepared. The extra bonus is that these will now be available as ebooks!
It’s time to meet the Night Watch, as the battle lines between Light and Dark have been drawn.
To join other Night Watch fans and for more updates on the series as we get closer to the launch, check out the Facebook page.
In a very scary Twitter takeover later today, Sandman Slim creator Richard Kadrey will be taking, um, possession of the HarperCollins Twitter acccount. His latest, a YA novel called Dead Set, comes out next week, just in time for Halloween.
