Kind, unassuming, and a force to be dealt with. This how I would describe author Linda Hirshman. Linda is a Supreme Court lawyer and political pundit who accepted the challenge of authoring a book about a topic she once knew little about. Her latest book, Victory: The Triumphant Gay Revolution is a daring venture behind the scenes of the world of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people.
It was so wonderful to have the opportunity to speak to Linda about the experience of writing Victory, and I was fascinated to find that I shared a personal connection with some of her historic resources. Meeting her in person gave the book more dimensionality to me, now sharing a fond connection with Linda. She was very happy to see the interest she had generated from within the HarperCollins family, and just couldn’t thank me enough for coming out and showing support.
What was most exciting for me was having the chance to ask Linda what her greatest challenge was while working on this Victory. She answered, “That’s a very good question! I was surprised to hear people actually say to me, ‘Who do you think you are that you could write such a book? You don’t know anything about these people.’”
The front cover says it all: “How a Despised Minority Pushed back, Beat Death, Found Love, and Changed America for everyone.” Thank you, Linda, for opening your heart to us and giving us such a wonderful and important book about a movement that created a template for other movements to follow for success.
